Red-Pyramid-Ad-MarvelRiordan, Rick. The Red Pyramid:The Graphic Novel.  Orpheus Collar, Illus. Graphic.  The Kane Chronicles Series. Hyperion, 2012. [192]p. $21.99. 978-1-4231-5068-8.  OUTSTANDING. GRADES 5-9.

This graphic novel is an excellent retelling of The Red Pyramid, the first book in the Kane Chronicles series. Carter and Sadie Kane are reunited after a years-long separation following their mother’s death. The discovery of their heritage as descendants of Egyptian pharaohs and subsequent battles with warring Egyptian deities is condensed but loses nothing in the translation from the text version. This lively adaptation retains all of the excitement and humor of the original book. The rich, dramatic illustrations not only bring the story vividly to life, they are a true rendering of the diversity of the book’s characters. A refreshing addition to a genre where characters of color are lacking.
